Calder Way Project Update April 9, 2026
/Dear property owners, business managers, and other stakeholders:
The Borough of State College is writing to provide you with the latest updates regarding Phase 2 of the Calder Way Improvement Project.
This past week the contractor, TerraWorks, has continued the installation of conduits from South Fraser Street to Miller Alley. The removal of the old water main also began in the area. On Monday, April 13, 2026, asphalt paving will begin from South Fraser Street to Miller Alley along with a concrete crew working on restoration of the stamped concrete sidewalk along Calder Way.
Barring no major unforeseen occurrence and no major weather events, Friday, April 17, the loading dock at the Fraser Centre will be opened. Vehicular traffic from Miller Alley to South Burrowes Street will remain closed.
Conduit installation and the removal of old water main will continue next week from Miller Alley to South Burrowes Street. The contractor will also begin restoration on the sidewalk between Sweet Tooth Bakery and 298 West Calder Way. Due to the restoration work, sidewalk closure signs will be placed directing pedestrians to New Alley. Those going to 298 West Calder Way will have access to the building.
Additionally, the contractor is planning to cross South Burrowes Street on Monday to work on waterlines. Access to the upper parking deck at the James M. Elliot Building (120 S Burrowes St), will remain open at this time. Employees can utilize Cresson Alley to gain access to the parking deck. On Tuesday a one lane restriction will be implemented on South Burrowes Street so the contractor can work within the intersection. Flaggers will be in place to help navigate traffic.
Attached to this email is a map showing the current closures as of Thursday, April 9. Once the crew moves down into the next section more correspondence and an updated map will be sent.
The Borough wants to emphasize that the work is not finished in this area. The contractor will have to return for final restoration.
The Borough wants to emphasize that primary communications will be sent via email through the Calder Way Communications list. Weekly updates will be provided on Thursday afternoons, and there will be times you will receive more than one update per week as conditions change.
Please remember that projects of this nature are fluid and often change, and they can be impacted by inclement weather. You will be updated in a timely manner about these changes as they are received.
